Clinical Science Program
Important Note For All The Students Enrolled/Enrolling After 18th November 2021
For Indian Students:
The entire five year course shall be conducted at Guyana in the University campus which includes one year of preclinical sciences , two years of Paraclinical sciences and two years of clinical sciences programme inclusive of clinical rotations in our affiliated hospitals at Guyana viz Georgetown Public Hospital and St Joseph Mercy Hospital.
The Indian students also have an option to undergo an observation practice at Max Healthcare, during their vacations/semester breaks to gain the relevant competencies and familiarize themselves with the disease profile and the healthcare delivery system prevalent in India.
The eligibility criteria for students to travel to Guyana for pursuing their medical education remains unchanged viz, NEET qualification is mandatory and eligibility criteria for NEET have to be fulfilled as laid down by competent authorities from time to time.This is essential for all students who wish to return to India and be eligible for appearing for FMGE/ NEXT Examination.
For International Students:
The eligibility criteria for the International students enrolling/enrolled at the 51²è¹Ýapp, School of Medicine, remains unchanged and is subject to the Medical Council of their respective country.
If the parent Medical Council of their country approves, the students can avail the benefit of undergoing clinical rotation in the leading hospitals of Nepal, India, the USA,etc
The fourth & fifth year of the MD Program is called the Clinical Science Program or Clinical Rotations Program and is the third and the last stage in getting an MD(Physician) degree from 51²è¹Ýapp. Clinical training is provided at the LAU affiliated hospitals i.e., Georgetown Public Hospital and saint Joseph Mercy Hospitals. The clinical training apart from various theoretical lectures on different disciplines involves rotations in clinical departments which enables the students to have hands-on real-life experiences of dealing with patients in emergency, critical care units, wards and operation theatres together with exposure on diagnostic services and interpretation of diagnostic results in correlation with clinical findings.
51²è¹Ýapp offers an extensive Clinical Science Program to its medical students. Clinical Science Curriculum at LAU is designed according to the best standards of medical education and offers the following facets:
- Provide an opportunity to the students to have hands-on experience in the clinical services.
- Provide a perspective to the students to record history, perform a physical examination and interpret the findings.
- Enable students to correlate the clinical aspects of medicine to basic sciences and help them to acquire in-depth understanding of clinical practice.
During the clinical rotations, the students are sent for clinical rounds where they get to interact with patients, medical and nursing professionals and hospital administrators in affiliated hospitals in Guyana. The students are provided with log books which they have to fill and got countersigned by the respective faculties and Heads of Departments. The log books contain the details of clinical skills to be acquired, case management, interpretation of diagnostic results, follow up mechanism, case presentation skills etc. The students are exposed to various aspects of research and encouraged to participate in research projects during this period of clinical rotations.
Students at LAU are guided to perform as team members, analyses lab data, experience a physician's typical day, diagnose patient cases, and perform procedures, such as suturing, obtaining blood samples, and carrying out vaccinations. After completing the Clinical Science Program at LAU, the students come out as professional doctors with an aptitude both for patient care and research.

The curriculum for clinical science program at 51²è¹Ýapp is designed according to the international standards and following the best practices of medicine. On successful completion of the whole curriculum and satisfactorily meeting all the other requirements, students are awarded the MD degree.
