51²è¹Ýapp, School of Medicine (LAU) is now certified by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).
ECFMG assesses the readiness of international medical graduates (IMGs) to enter residency or fellowship programs in the United States that are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), the non-profit council responsible for accrediting the majority of graduate medical training, residency and internship programs for physicians in the United States. ACGME requires IMGs who enter ACGME-accredited programs to be certified by ECFMG.
ECFMG Certification is also a requirement for IMGs to take Step 3 of the three-step United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) and to obtain an unrestricted license to practice medicine in the United States.
LAU is one of the few medical universities in Caribbean Region which is certified and approved by ECFMG.
How ECFMG Certification Will Benefit LAU Medical Students?
Since LAU is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS) and now, also fulfills the eligibility requirements and criteria of ECFMG, therefore, LAU students are eligible for Step 1 as well as USMLE Step 2 (Clinical Knowledge and Clinical Skills) of United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) - a three-step gateway to medical licensure in the United States.
Apart from having USMLE focused medical curriculum already in place, LAU will also provide USMLE coaching to its students to help them appear for USMLE steps and qualify Step 1 and Step 2 before completion of their MD Program.
On qualifying Step 1 and Step 2 of the USMLE and after successful completion of their MD Program, LAU medical graduates will be able to apply for ECFMG certification and become eligible for USMLE Step 3.
Once students quality all the steps of USMLE, it opens the doors for medical licensure in the United States and many other countries like India!
